Description

Authentic German Oktoberfest Beer-Braised Bratwurst with Spicy Mustard Cream combines traditional bratwurst sausages slowly cooked in Oktoberfest beer with caramelized onions and finished with a rich, tangy mustard cream sauce. Crafted for discerning home chefs seeking restaurant-quality German cuisine with authentic Oktoberfest flavors.

Ingredients

Scale

46 traditional German bratwurst sausages

1 pint (16 oz) Oktoberfest beer (Märzen or German lager)

1 large yellow onion, sliced

2 tablespoons vegetable oil

2 tablespoons spicy German mustard

1/2 cup heavy cream

2 cloves garlic, minced

Salt and pepper to taste

Fresh parsley or thyme for garnish

Instructions

1. Heat 2 tablespoons of oil in a large skillet or Dutch oven over medium-high heat.

2. Add bratwurst sausages and brown on all sides, about 8-10 minutes total. Remove and set aside.

3. In the same skillet, add sliced onions and cook over medium heat until caramelized, about 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally.

4. Add minced garlic and cook for 1 minute until fragrant.

5. Pour in the Oktoberfest beer, scraping the bottom of the skillet to release browned bits.

6. Return bratwurst to the skillet and bring to a simmer.

7. Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 20 minutes until bratwurst are cooked through.

8. Stir in heavy cream and spicy mustard, cooking for 5 minutes until sauce thickens.

9. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

10. Garnish with fresh parsley or thyme before serving.

Notes

For best results, use authentic German bratwurst from a specialty butcher or German deli.

Choose a quality Oktoberfest beer (Märzen style) for the most authentic flavor – avoid light lagers.

Take time to properly caramelize the onions – this adds essential sweetness to balance the beer and mustard.

The mustard cream can be adjusted to taste – start with less spicy mustard if you prefer milder heat.

Serve immediately while hot with traditional German sides like sauerkraut, potato salad, or soft pretzels.
