Description

Recreate Sun Valley’s famous Hound Dog hot dog at home with this authentic chili cheese recipe. This classic American comfort food features a perfectly balanced combination of hearty chili, melted cheese, tangy mustard, and fresh onions that delivers the same bold flavors as the original $4.50 restaurant version.

Ingredients

Scale

1 high-quality beef hot dog (Ball Park or Hebrew National)

1 fresh hot dog bun, preferably sesame seed

1/2 cup homemade or canned chili (Hormel recommended)

1/4 cup sharp cheddar cheese, shredded

2 tablespoons yellow mustard (French’s Classic)

2 tablespoons white onions, finely diced

1 tablespoon butter for toasting bun

Instructions

1. Heat the chili in a small saucepan over medium heat, stirring occasionally until hot and slightly thickened, about 3-4 minutes.

2. Slice the hot dog bun lengthwise, leaving it attached, and lightly butter the inside surfaces.

3. Toast the buttered bun in a skillet or toaster until golden brown and crispy, about 2 minutes.

4. Grill or pan-fry the hot dog over medium-high heat, turning frequently, until it develops a nice snap and is heated through, about 5-6 minutes.

5. Place the hot dog in the toasted bun and immediately top with the hot chili sauce.

6. Sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese evenly over the chili while it’s hot so the cheese melts.

7. Add two parallel lines of yellow mustard along the length of the hot dog.

8. Top with the diced fresh onions and serve immediately while hot.

Notes

For the most authentic taste, use quality ingredients similar to what the Sun Valley shop uses.

The key to the perfect Hound Dog is the proper ratios – don’t overload with toppings.

Make sure the chili is hot when you add it so the cheese melts properly.

Fresh diced onions provide the perfect crunch and sweet contrast to the savory elements.

This recipe recreates the exact flavor profile of the original Hound Dog from 8749 Glenoaks Blvd.

Can be easily doubled or tripled for parties – perfect for game day or casual gatherings.
